Roland Park prides itself on providing a wide variety of extracurricular and after-school activities to enrich students’ learning experiences. This includes a comprehensive after school athletics program that is open to students in grades sixth, seventh, and eighth. Enthusiastically embraced by students and led by energetic and creative coaches who are faculty at the school, participation in sports teams is at an all-time high. Roland Park is committed to ensuring that all of its middle school students have access to a wide array of sports as such opportunities are essential to a child’s mental and physical well-being.
In the fall, Roland Park participates in a boys and girls soccer league that is sponsored by Baltimore City’s Parks and People Foundation. These teams compete against other public middle schools from around the City and historically have had strong winning records. In 2006, the girls and boys soccer teams had undefeated seasons, culminating in both winning the Baltimore Middle School Soccer Championships. The current coaches are Darlene Furno, Ansel Sanders and James Kinstle.
In the winter, girls and boys play basketball. In past years, the boys basketball team played games against private school teams leading up to a much-anticipated student-faculty basketball game at the end of the season. Because of the popularity and demand for this sport, however, an Intramural Boys Basketball League was created in 2007 under the leadership of teacher Dan Hellerbach. This League has been highly successful, as all middle school boys interested in playing basketball can do so at a competitive level. In addition, 2007 marked the beginning of a competitive girls' basketball team that plays a series of home and away games against local private schools. This team is coached by Dan Hellerbach and Janet Fonda.
In the spring, the Roland Park Rams (named after the school’s mascot) compete in the Parks and People Foundation’s boys lacrosse and girls soccer leagues. Like the fall soccer teams, both teams compete against public middle school teams from around Baltimore, and both experience tremendous success. In the spring of 2006, the girl’s soccer team, coached by Darlene Furno, won the Baltimore City Middle School Soccer Championship. The boys lacrosse team, coached by teachers Ansel Sanders and Nick D’Ambrosio, advanced to the Baltimore City Middle School Lacrosse Championship in both 2005 and 2006, winning the championship in 2005.
