Brain Targeted Teaching

Roland Park Elementary/Middle School follows the brain-targeted teaching model, which was developed by Dr. Mariale Hardiman who served as the school’s principal from 1993 to 2005.  During her twelve years as principal, Dr. Hardiman developed the brain-targeted teaching model based on her research in the fields of neurosciences and education.  This model, explained in Dr. Hardiman’s 2003 book Connecting Brain Research with Effective Teaching: The Brain Targeted Teaching Model,  describes six stages—known as “brain targets”--of the learning process and describes how brain research supports each stage.  The six “brain targets” are:  emotional climate, physical environment, learning design, teaching for mastery, teaching for application, and evaluating learning.

Examples of the brain-targeted teaching model at work at Roland Park are numerous. For example, the halls of Roland Park Elementary/Middle School are filled with brightly colored murals that grace the walls, the scent of peppermint is used in kindergarten classrooms, or classical music can be heard in third-grade rooms.  First graders may conduct surveys as they become “data detectives” and fifth graders may combine yoga with the study of poetry and art. Sixth graders wear costumes of Roman gods and goddesses as they describe ancient religious rituals, and eighth graders determine the probability of getting out of school early based on yearly weather statistics.
